Happy National Bird Day! Did you know that Summit County is a haven for diverse hawk species? From the more common Red-tailed Hawk to the agile Cooper's Hawk, the sharp-eyed Sharp-shinned Hawk, and the formidable Northern Goshawk – our skies are filled with these incredible birds! But there's more to them than meets the eye. Hawks are renowned for their extraordinary long-distance migrations, turning our region into a temporary home for some species during certain times of the year. Beyond their impressive flights, hawks also play a vital role in our ecosystem. They are nature's pest control experts, keeping rodent populations in check by preying on small mammals like mice and voles. Their contribution to maintaining a balanced ecosystem is immeasurable.
